PROJECT UPDATE: BENTON CHARTER TOWNSHIP WATER FILTER PLANT & RAW WATER PUMP STATION

The Benton Charter Township Raw Water Pump Station is being constructed at a rapid pace in order to be ready by mid-September, in time to introduce lake water into the filtration system for the first time. The 36-inch concrete carrier pipe has been inserted into the bottom of the shorewell, and only three more pieces have to be installed out by Lake Michigan in order to complete the mile-long piping into the lake. The traveling filter screen and 36-inch intake gate valve are being installed inside the shorewell within the next two weeks. After these items are installed, the second floor precast will be set and two weeks after, the roof precast. With the roof structure completed, all interior piping, raw water feed pumps, electrical and chemical feed lines can be installed.

At the Filtration Plant, process piping and filtration equipment have been installed and crews from Siemens have begun the commissioning process for the control wiring on the filters, compressors and blowers. Instrumentation wiring is nearly complete and the SCADA control panels have been installed. Mechanical and electrical contractors are installing the remaining piping for the backwash system and the chemical feed system. Both systems will be completed by August 15, in time for Siemens to start pushing water through the entire plant to begin the functional commissioning of the entire water system as a whole.

Light fixtures have been installed in the process floor area and switches and receptacles are being wired. In the laboratory and office areas, FRP panels are being installed on the walls, acoustical ceiling grid is being hung and doors and hardware will be installed shortly. The laboratory casework and epoxy tops will be installed in about four weeks. Site work is 90 percent complete, with the exception of some asphalt paving, light poles and hydro seed, which are scheduled to be completed within the next two weeks.
